Happy Friday! Here is what’s new in the social media world this week:

Facebook:

  • Facebook is looking to use video ads to increase retail sales. The social network has recently launched Collection. This new ad format displays a video on the top half of the ad with four recommended product images below it.
  • Facebook Live is updated to enable users to stream live video and gameplay footage from desktop and laptop computers. By allowing laptop and desktop users to share Facebook Live videos, the company hopes to feature gaming tutorials.
  • Facebook is in the process of testing a new design for comments on the platform. They are taking design inspiration form messaging apps and are considering implementing bubbles in comment threads.

YouTube:

  • Some of YouTube’s largest advertisers have pulled advertising from the platform due to ads being displayed alongside videos promoting terrorist groups. AT&T, Verizon, and Johnson & Johnson are the brands that have pulled ads.

Instagram:

  • Instagram is continuing to work to reduce cyberbullying. This week, they are implementing new safety features that will blur “sensitive photos and videos” from the homepage and the user’s profile. The app has also enabled two-factor authentication to keep accounts safe.
  • Over 1 million monthly advertisers now use Instagram to create ads. Instagram revealed plans to book a service within the app. The new feature will be released before the end of this year.
  • Instagram now offers users the ability to save their live video stream to their phone.

Twitter:

  • Twitter is working hard to eliminate accounts that promote terrorism. So far, they have shut down over 377,000 accounts.
  • Twitter is working on its live video features and now has API access, which enable broadcasts to be live-streamed with professional equipment.
