It’s Friday, which means it is time for another social media recap! This week, Instagram and Facebook have experienced the most changes. This is not too surprising, as Facebook just had its annual summit, the F8 developer conference.

Instagram:

  • Instagram has launched a new feature, inspired by Pinterest’s boards, that enables users to organize photos into private collections. This update builds upon a December update that let users privately save posts. Unlike Pinterest, Instagram’s collections are all private.
  • This week, Instagram announced that Stories has more than 200 million users. This is an impressive number as it took Snapchat five years to reach 150 million users. Instagram celebrated the milestone by releasing new stickers and features.
  • At the F8 developer conference, Facebook announced that they will be releasing an update soon that allows people to browse on Instagram without an internet connection. While you are browsing offline, you can view cached images, write comments, like pictures, save photos, and follow/unfollow profiles. Instagram will post those actions once you are connected to the internet.

Facebook:

  • Facebook held its F8 developer conference this past week. During the conference, they presented new technology and ideas for Facebook and Instagram. One of the tools they presented was that its hardware lab is crafting technology that will allow people to type with their thoughts and hear through their skin.
  • Mark Zuckerberg revealed his plans to use the cameras that have been installed to Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp. The first phase was to create the cameras and the second phase is to create a camera augmented reality platform.
  • The reason behind Facebook’s $2.3 billion purchase of Oculus became a bit clearer after F8. Facebook for Virtual Reality or Spaces will allow people to interact with their friends and family in virtual reality. The feature only works if you have an Oculus Rift device.
  • Messenger advancements were also discussed during F8. The platform will be releasing more bots, such as Apple Music, the Wall Street Journal, and Spotify.
