Today officially marks the last day of the first quarter of 2017. Quite a lot happened in the social media world during the first quarter. The following social media networks pulled in some final updates before welcoming in the second quarter.

Twitter:

  • Twitter’s 140-character count limit has forced tweeters to craft succinct messages. People who often struggle with that limit will be happy to hear that Twitter is making an effort to expand it. On Thursday, Twitter announced that they will no longer be counting usernames in the character count.

Facebook:

  • Did you know that a large portion of online donations occur during November and December? Facebook is working to spread out the course of online donations through a new feature – personal fundraiser. This will allow users 18 years and older to create a Facebook Page to raise money.
  • Facebook wants to make it easier for users to connect with local state and federal government representatives. The feature will be called Town Hall and it will provide a list of the politicians and contact information. The feature will also provide election reminders.
  • Facebook Stories has officially been incorporated into the platform globally this week. There are also different filters and effects that people can add to their stories. Facebook will also provide branded filters. They have partnered with movie studios to promote upcoming films.
  • Facebook Messenger has revealed a new a Live Location feature. The feature will let users share their location for up to one hour.
