Artificial Intelligence is upon us and it is predicted that more and more brands will be utilizing bots. AI has the potential to improve customer service and merchandising. Global revenue from AI is expected to rise from $643.7 million in 2016 to $36.8 billion by 2025! Consumers are not happy with the possibility of AI bots replacing human workers in store. However, they wouldn’t mind speaking to a bot online.
Lately, a few brands have begun using the term AI to differentiate themselves. We’ve found a few examples of companies utilizing AI in new ways.
- IBM Watson. You’ve most likely heard about IBM’s Watson winning $1 million on Jeopardy. Watson will be turning 8 in 2017 and is extremely smart. Marketers are turning to Watson to provide consumer data. Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, the designers behind Marchesa turned to Watson to help them design a dress for the Met Gala. Watson helped the designers determine the best fabric, color, and “wow factor.”
- The North Face. The North Face has also utilized AI bots to improve sales and user experience on the site. They created a questionnaire that helps determine what type of coat would be best for the consumer.
- Starbucks. Starbucks has been experimenting with AI voice-activated apps. In 2017, Starbucks is expected to release an update to its app that will be titled “My Starbucks Barista.” The feature will allow consumers to place an order by talking to the virtual barista. This will enable them to pick up their order without waiting in lines.
- Lowe’s. Lowe’s is in the process of implementing LoweBots in 11 Bay Area locations. The bots will interact with customers. They also have the capability to determine if a customer is idly standing in front of a product. In addition, Lowe’s is partnering up with Microsoft to create a virtual reality experience in-stores that will allow consumers to digitally design a kitchen.
