This week’s social media update is in!

YouTube

  • After years of planning, YouTube has released its new service YouTube TV. The new offering is different from YouTube Red. The video sharing website has been quietly meeting with media companies to get them to sign on to airing their content on YouTube TV. CBS was the first major network to sign on. The service offering is akin to Hulu and Netflix. The major difference is YouTube TV will offer full, live broadcast feeds. The service will cost $35/month for a family of six accounts. YouTube TV offers a cloud DVR with no storage limits.

Snapchat

  • Following the release of Spectacles late last year, Snap Inc. is rumored to be experimenting with a 360 camera. This rumor follows another leak from the New York Times that reported Snap Inc. is working on a camera drone.
  • Although Snapchat reached popularity with a younger crowd, the app is growing its user base with middle aged adults.

Twitter

  • Twitter is working very hard to prevent abusive comments and behavior. The social network is utilizing algorithms that identify abusive actions on the site. Twitter is releasing a new feature that will prevent users from seeing notifications from certain accounts.

Facebook

  • Facebook Live modernized Ghana’s general elections. This past December, many people watched live videos during the election. News networks in Ghana actually conducted livestreams of their TV content on Facebook.
  • Facebook is working to provide an easier environment for businesses to manage interactions. While it is only available on the web version right now, businesses should start to notice that there is a new inbox in Pages that incorporates Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook Interactions.
  • Yet again, Facebook is updating its algorithm. This time the update focuses on organizing the newsfeed based on reactions. The reason behind this change is that it takes more time to react to a post, Facebook believes that you will care about that post more than any one that you simply like.
  • Facebook Video is now released on Apple TV and Samsung’s Smart TVs.
