There have been a lot of changes in the social media world this past week.

Twitter

  • Yesterday, Twitter filed a law suit against the United States government. The reason behind the law suit is that the government wanted to determine the real identity of a Twitter user who has been posting criticizing messages on Twitter about the government and administration.
  • Twitter has released a lite version of its app to enable users in countries with less access to data to use Twitter.

Facebook

  • Facebook’s digital assistant, M, is getting smarter. A new update will roll out to beta iOS and Android users soon. In it, M will analyze conversations and provide helpful tips. For instance, if you mention to a friend that you will take an Uber to their place, M will pop up to help you book that Uber.
  • Facebook is working hard to educate its users to spot fake news. The social network wrote an article to share tips for spotting false news.
  • Have you noticed a rocket ship pop up on your Facebook app? Don’t worry, it is just the social network testing yet another news feed alternative. The newsfeed will show content from pages that you do not currently like, but Facebook thinks you will enjoy.
  • Facebook is making it easier for publishers to add calls-to-action to their Instant Articles.
  • The social network is updating the Delivery Insights dashboard to provide improved metrics from ad campaigns. Some new metrics that will be included are letting advertisers know if audiences overlap to impact performance or if people are overexposed to ads.

YouTube

  • YouTube has over one billion users across the world. This means that the users do not all speak English. YouTube recognized that and began offering a “Community Contributions” section for creators to turn on. The feature enables the community to find content and translate it into their native language.
  • Following brands pulling advertisements due to being shown alongside controversial videos, Google has announced that it is working with third-party companies to ensure the safety of videos for brands.

Snapchat

  • One month after Snapchat’s IPO, the app is working hard to prove its value to brands. The company is gathering data on users to help establish its role as a strong competitor to Facebook and Instagram.
  • Snapchat has released a new feature – searchable Snapchat Stories. Users are now able to search from over a million Snapchat Stories.

Periscope

  • Periscope unveiled a new feature – users can watch and broadcast live 360-degree video.
