The Summer Olympics: Rio 2016

It’s the moment we have all been eagerly awaiting…the 2016 Rio Olympics! Google has also been anticipating the Olympic events as evident by its intensive search features. This year, the technology powerhouse is informing users in 30+ countries of event schedules, medal counts, athlete information, competition results and TV schedules.

Not only is Google featuring coverage on its main site, but it is also utilizing YouTube. Event highlights from official broadcasters and 15 top YouTube creators are live-streaming coverage. The Google app is getting in on the Olympic treatment with the option for users to be automatically updated on events and the medal count. In addition, us folks stuck in America can explore the venues via Google Maps Street View.

Another aspect of the Olympic games is social coverage. The IOC created guidelines for content athletes, coaches, and officials may post. They have restricted athletes who have non-Olympic sponsors from tweeting directly about them during the Games. They also want to approve audio and video content. The IOC has partnered with social sites to create official Olympic social content. This year’s games revealed the largest amount of Twitter emojis to date.

In the past four years since London ’12, Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook Live, and Periscope have taken the social platform world by force. Twitter alone has enabled us to keep up with athletes and their loved ones. Within a few days of the games, Simone Biles’s mom tweeted out her well wishes to her daughter, Adam Peaty’s grandmother tweeted her congratulations to her gold-medal winning grandson, and athletes have updated fans with their training process leading up to the games. Snapchat has a variety of geotags and filters available for users, including an updated medal count.
