If you’re struggling with writer’s block, don’t get discouraged!

Over a decade ago, Bill Gates famously stated “Content is King.” This phrase still rings true to marketers today. Content curating, creation and distribution are all essential parts of any marketing strategy regardless of the industry.

If you ask any marketer, they will tell you that there are two challenges regarding content: the creative process and getting people to engage with your content.

The creative process, however, can potentially be much more difficult because you may encounter an obstacle that all content marketer’s dread: writer’s block!

There are few things more irritating than this creative roadblock. Imagine that you have great innovative ideas, but you just cannot seem to piece them together in a way that your audience will find interesting and beneficial.

If you’ve ever experienced a nasty case of writer’s block, don’t worry; you’re not alone. We’ve all been there at one point or another. To help get your creative juices flowing and hear the calling of your inner muse, we’ve listed some tips that will help you over come writer’s block.

Read Different Articles or Blogs

If you’re stuck, try reading other sources surrounding the subject. Doing so may inspire you or give you ideas about what you want to talk about. An effective skill of any writer is being able to restate, describe or build off a topic. Perhaps you want to argue a different perspective or further develop ideas of someone else.

Be warned: Don’t copy someone’s work and pass it off as your own. It’ll only get you into trouble and negatively affect your website’s SEO. Google will also catch this and you will be blacklisted and your website will not show up in any searches.

Change Your Environment

Switch it up! Go to a coffee shop, a library or anywhere you want.  Write with a pen and paper instead of on your laptop. Get out of the place where you’re currently distracted and venture to a place that feels fresh and new.

Perhaps if you usually write in the morning, you should try writing at night. Or maybe you should challenge yourself by writing about a topic or in a certain style that is new to you. Whatever you choose to do, just switch it up!

Free Write

An effective way to combat writer’s block is to simply write. Sounds counterintuitive, right? But you’d be surprised how effective this technique is. You don’t have to write about your current project; anything is fair game. Just get it all out on paper.

As you continue to write and emerge yourself into the creative process, you may think of ways to link together your ideas in styles that you overlooked before. Don’t worry about editing or writing eloquently, doing so will just make you second-guess your ideas.

Take a Break

There may be a time when your body and mind need to take a break because both are spent. Taking a break may be risky, especially if you have a deadline for an article, but sometimes it is a necessity.

Maybe you have personal problems such as anxiety from your job or family life. Or maybe you’re just mentally exhausted from stress. When this happens, the best thing you can do is take some time to recharge.

Do What Works For You

There is no one size fits all way to overcome writer’s block. Everyone experiences the creative process differently. If none of these tips work for you, don’t beat yourself up over it. That’s not to say that these strategies don’t work; they just might not work for you.

Don’t be scared to experiment with other strategies such as listening to music, looking up inspirational quotes or simply doing something creative like painting or drawing.
