Snapchat recently rebranded its corporate name to Snap Inc. in the hopes of encompassing future endeavors and separating itself from just being a social media app. This isn’t the first name change Snap Inc. has undergone. In fact, the app used to be known as Picaboo. Snapchat was founded in 2011 and has grown to 100 million daily users and 10+ billion daily video views. The rebrand left some of its users wondering why rebrand now? The answer is that the new Snap Inc. is focusing on being a camera company, as opposed to solely being a social network.
Part of the rebrand includes the release of Spectacles, sunglasses that have a wireless video camera that is connected directly to the Memories portion of Snapchat. Spectacles will enable people to re-watch memories the way they experienced them. The videos will be recorded in a circular format, simulating the human eye.
Since its announcement, Spectacles has been compared to Google Glass. There are quite a few differences between the two. Spectacles are being released in limited quantity for $130, in order for Snap Inc. to gauge interest. Google Glass was released for $1,000 and interest quickly fizzled because of privacy concerns. The design of the camera and glasses are very different. Spectacles are hip and trendy compared to the antiquated Google Glass.
Another purpose of the rebrand is to allow for consumers to find its products easier. Instead of finding financial information on the company, users can be brought directly to the products that Snap Inc. sells.
What does the change mean for companies utilizing Snapchat? Nothing has changed within the app itself as part of the rebrand. If anything, the implementation of Spectacles could provide an interesting way to share memories with your followers.
