East Coast DDoS Attack
A Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack on Dyn, a major Domain Name Server provider, has brought down many of the world’s most visited sites such as CNN, PayPal, Pinterest, Reddit, Spotify, Twitter, and Yelp. Domain Name Servers map domain names like www.krausgroupmarketing.com to the corresponding IP addresses of the servers on which they are hosted. Without DNS, servers can not be found, and no content will be served.
The problems started being reported around 6AM EST, and reportedly a second wave of attacks was initiated around 12:30PM EST. DDoS attacks work by flooding Domain Name Servers with millions of concurrent requests which effectively make them stop responding because they are overloaded.
