Why Good Link Builders Matter and how to do it properly.

Link building is an important skill to know when it comes to SEO marketing . It helps draw traffic to your website and rank higher. According to “The Beginner’s Guide to Link Building,” “links as a ranking factor are what allowed Google to start to dominate the search engine market back in the late 1990s.” So yes, links are kind of important. Knowing how to be a good link builder is even more important. Here are some tips on becoming a good link builder.

1. Placement is everything.

There are many pages on the Internet that seem to be reliable, clean and clear. Then you click around to see what the rest of the website looks like. Surely enough, all of the other pages look like that side of your hometown you were afraid to walk through as a kid. It’s a little sketchy. A good link builder knows that he will not want his website to be associated with a website that looks like something from out of the Twilight Zone.

2. Communication is key!

Communication is the MOST important skill any human being can have in life. It is even more important if you’re working on link building for your website. You need to be able to communicate clearly and concisely to properly ask another website owner if he could link to yours. He doesn’t want to sit there for an hour staring at his computer screen and trying to figure out what you’re saying in your jumbled 10-paragraph e-mail.

3. Be on top of your links.

Make sure all of the links on your website are still working. As you probably already know, it is very annoying and frustrating to click on a link that does not work any longer. You have to be aware of links that are no longer working or are redirecting, and you have to be able to fix them.

4. Be aware of your link profile.

There are tools available online to do things like help identify links that aren’t working, find when most of the anchors are the same keyword and alert you when things are just wrong. As the link builder, it is your responsibility to always know what is happening to the links on your website. It shouldn’t be a client’s responsibility to tell you when something is wrong.

5. Know how to run reports.

In addition to being on top of your links and being aware of your link profile, you should have some way of knowing when and how something went wrong. Moz’s Algorithm Change History is one tool that lists years of changes and even lists updates you may not have noticed on your site. Knowing how to run reports will help you build your links better.
